Bishops Ask For Clemency In Death Penalty Case
Bishops from the Diocese of Richmond and Arlington have asked Gov. Mark Warner to grant clemency for an inmate scheduled for execution on July 11.Bishops Francis DiLorenzo and Paul Loverde sent a letter to Warner late last month asking Warner to commute Robin Lovitt's sentence to life in prison.
Lovitt was convicted in 1999 of stabbing 45-year-old Clayton Dicks with a pair of scissors during a pool hall robbery in Arlington a year earlier.
Virginia's death penalty is "the extreme and unnecessary measure of taking ... life to show that taking life is wrong," DiLorenzo and Loverde said in a letter dated June 21.
