Connecticut Forgos Death Penalty Debate

With a looming execution, the state's senate has decided against opening up a debate about the death penalty due to lack of support. Read this article from today's Hartford Courant.

HARTFORD, Conn. -- Despite an execution scheduled for next week, the state Senate has decided to forgo a debate on the death penalty.

Senate President Pro Tem Donald E. Williams, D-Brooklyn, said Democrats, who control the Senate, decided Wednesday during a closed-door caucus that the issue was not worth debating because there is not enough support to abolish Connecticut's death penalty.

The House of Representatives already defeated legislation on March 30 that would have replaced capital punishment with life in prison without the chance of release.

"Folks are interested in moving forward the issue of life in prison without parole as opposed to the death penalty, but they want to do it carefully," said Williams, who opposes executions.
