Deadline Screens In The UK
Many thanks for Rebecca who arranged this great screening. To host a screening or Viewing Party of your own please check out our website or email: beth@bigmouthproductions.com.
I work for Amicus, a London (England)-based charity that assists US capital defenders. We do this by sending UK lawyers and law students/graduates over to the US on internships where they assist in all aspects of a capital defender's work. We also provide casework assistance from the UK, where UK lawyers carry out research and draft motions and briefs on specific topics for cases - including briefs for the Supreme Court (often in conjunction with the Bar Human Rights Committee of England & Wales and the Law Society of England & Wales). Our website is www.amicus-alj.org although the new (and updated!) site is presently being worked on.
Anyway, the reason I emailed was to report a Viewing Party that we arranged over in England in May - 15 May to be exact. Over 170 people attended a talk by Juan Melendez, who spent almost 18 years on Florida's Death Row before being exonerated. They then watched a screening of Deadline. Those attending ranged from current law students to graduates and legal professionals, together with non lawyers interested in capital punishment.
The feedback from the event was extremely positive. As a direct result of the viewing many new volunteers have contacted us to see how they can provide their assistance either in the US or from the UK. Your DVD has proved to be an extremely effective tool in raising awareness of capital punishment amongst the UK legal profession and I have no doubt that it has been responsible for persuading several people to undertake internships in the US, not to mention encouraging over a hundred people to become more active in dealing with capital punishment issues.
Many thanks
