Finding Legal Affairs

Two interesting articles on the Legal Affairs website.

First, The Tinderbox written by Donald Cabana, a spirited ex-warden of the Parchman Prison in Mississippi back in the 1980s. He recalls with vivid details, the day when five inmates in the dayroom seized a half-dozen officers as hostages, and then hours later when he offers emotional support to an inmate who just lost his mother. (Cabana was also featured in Deadline).

For a warden, the need for both routine and vigilance means experiencing radical swings in emotion several times each day. I never felt that range of emotion more acutely than one oppressively hot summer day 16 years ago at the Mississippi State Penitentiary.

A second article, Lifers, written by Sasha Abramsky, gives insight to some of the consequences of Life Without Parole. (Abramsky happens to also be my former Professor at Hunter College!)

Life sentences are given to convicts who are said to be beyond rehabilitation, but the warden of Louisiana's Angola Prison says most of his aging charges have long since gone through "criminal menopause." What should we do with the growing number of elderly prisoners who've left their criminal selves behind?
