Kenya Set to Abolish Death Penalty
Just a reminder that the death penalty is under examination not only across the country but across the world as well. Perhaps states like North Carolina will follow Kenya's lead?
Death-row convicts will soon have their sentences reduced to life imprisonment.Justice Minister Kiraitu Murungi said yesterday he was working closely with the President's Office to commute to life all the death penalties.
Said Mr Murungi: "We are committed to abolishing the death penalty. The death sentence is a violation of the right to life."
He was speaking in his Nairobi office after receiving the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights' annual report.
In the 1970s, it was argued that only the death sentence could deter criminals. But, although the penalty has continued, there has been no downturn in crime.
