Latest DP news in New York

On June 24, 2004, the New York Court of Appeals struck down the New York death penalty statute as being unconstitutional. The New York Assembly is now considering legislation to "fix" the law, but many legislators believe New York would be better off without a death penalty. According to the Executive Director of New Yorkers Against the Death Penalty (NYADP), David Kaczynski, the Legislature returns to session today, August 2, and this week is crucial. "We expect that the Legislature will be very busy in August, attempting to accomplish various items of business before the elections. We certainly hope that the death penalty will not become a priority among members hoping to run on their accomplishments."

If New York survives this week without passage of a death penalty bill, then NYADP will continue working to cultivate alliances between anti-death penalty legislators and those who believe that the issue deserves more deliberation, including more input from the public and from legal and constitutional experts.
