New York City Hearing - Take Two

Here is a message from New Yorkers Against the Death Penalty:

The hearings on December 15 went a long way to help get rid of the death penalty for good in New York State.  Powerful testimony, good press coverage and follow up contacts with legislators have made it less and less likely that capital punishment will be reinstated here. The large turnout was cited in many of the news reports about the hearing.

As you may know, two more hearings are now scheduled: Friday, January 21, at 10AM at the NYC Bar Association, 42 West 44th Street, and one on Tuesday, January 25, in Albany.  We know that, once again, the size of the turnout will be critical.  We have succeeded in getting the attention of Assembly Speaker Silver and others in the Assembly who have not yet committed to supporting our cause.  They will certainly take notice of headlines saying “Death Penalty Opponents Again Pack the Room; Legislators Impressed with Intensity of Opposition to Reinstatement.”

For faculty members: Please make every effort to be there.  I believe this is a very suitable activity for students and for classes. Please consider suggesting to your students and colleagues that they attend.

For all others: Please make every effort to be there.  Please invite your families, friends, neighbors, colleagues, fellow activists, members of your church, synagogue, temple, fellow students, (you get the drift)… to attend as well.

We have come so far. Let’s make this work!

The groups that organized press conferences and the sizable turnout at the two NYC hearings have teamed up to put together a web based initiative to keep the death penalty out of New York State.
