Ryan addresses ACLU
Former Governor George Ryan spoke at ACLU's annual meeting in Peoria on Saturday night.
Ryan said he has no plans to stop advocating for the elimination of capital punishment. If any of his beliefs have changed since leaving office, it is an even stronger conviction the system is flawed."We have now made the death penalty so culturally acceptable that people don't think it is brutal," Ryan said. "We moved from beheadings, stoning, hanging, firing squads, electric chair and now lethal injection. There is no blood, no violence. Strap the man to a gurney, open the curtains, inject him and watch him die. It has become so socially acceptable that people don't question it."
