Scott Turow gives talk at Stanford University

Two nights ago, Scott Turow (one of the subjects in Deadline) gave a talk about the two presidential candidates and their views on the death penalty at Stanford University's Bookstore. Unfortunately I couldn't make it, but there was an article in the University's paper, The Stanford Daily.

Turow explained, that the candidates’ opposing stances on the issue have been kept under the rug because of political concerns. Although Bush would be tempted to play up the issue, because about 70 percent of the American public favors the death penalty, he has not done so because many Catholics — generally death penalty opponents — are swing voters this year.
Also, he said that swing states like Michigan, Iowa, Wisconsin, and Minnesota are among the 12 states that do not practice capital punishment.

I wonder if Stanford is trying to become like Northwestern by trying to open an innocence project (stealing Larry Marshall from Illinois) and having speakers like Scott Turow.

I am so glad that Scott brought up the point that the death penalty is being avoided in this election. I do think that it is a smart move for both Kerry and Bush as politicans in a "race" but keeping the death penalty out of the mind of the public makes the work of abolitionists so much more difficult. It really provides more evidence that people are afraid to have any real dialogue around this issue.
