Sister of Mercy

Renny Cushing, from Murder Victims' Families for Human Rights, sent me this email that I thought I'd share:

Last week's hearing at the Connecticut legislature on the abolition bill was very powerful. It clear that the proximity of the first execution in Connecticut and New England in almost a half century does focus the debate about whether or not the government should kill people. I think all the reasons to abolish the death penalty were laid out in a thoughtful way, and a foundation to build toward abolition is in place.

To me though, the most compelling speaker that I heard speak to the legislature that day was Nancy Filiault, whose sister Kitty and her 2 children were brutally murdered in 2000.  I have been doing this work with victims opposed to the death penalty for some time now, and still I am constantly touched by the voices of victims who honor their loss of a loved one to homicide.  Nancy touched me in part because her appearance before the legislature came just 10 days after she had appeared in court to speak at the sentencing of her sister's and niece and nephew's killer. It is knowing from personal experience how raw one is at that time when the court stuff is just completed that makes me appreciate Nancy's courage.

You can learn more about Nancy and her case in this article in The New Haven Advocate.
