Tookie Williams Was Executed
This morning, Tookie Williams was executed. Here is the Governor's statement. Here is a troubling excerpt:
The dedication of Williams’ book “Life in Prison casts significant doubt on his personal redemption. This book was published in 1998, several years after Williams’ claimed redemptive experience. Specifically, the book is dedicated to “Nelson Mandela, Angela Davis, Malcolm X, Assata Shakur, Geronimo Ji Jaga Pratt, Ramona Africa, John Africa, Leonard Peltier, Dhoruba Al-Mujahid, George Jackson, Mumia Abu-Jamal, and the countless other men, women, and youths who have to endure the hellish oppression of living behind bars. The mix of individuals on this list is curious. Most have violent pasts and some have been convicted of committing heinous murders, including the killing of law enforcement. But the inclusion of George Jackson on this list defies reason and is a significant indicator that Williams is not reformed and that he still sees violence and lawlessness as a legitimate means to address societal problems.

What, exactly, did you find "troubling" about the excerpt?

George Jackson was a juvenile when he was sentenced to 1 year to life for stealing $70 from a gas station. He organized a group for prison reform and spent 8 years in solitary for his role in that group. He was accused of murdering a guard during an uprising and was himself murdered by guards, being shot multiple times in the back for an "attempted escape". He was a revolutionary fighting for his and others rights in prison and was murdered for it. Why does the governor see the inclusion of George Jackson on Tookie's list as proof that he was not reformed? Didn't the governor notice what else was going on with Tookie? Didn't he bother to see the amazing accomplishments he was making with gang truces and kids' education against gangs and violence? Tookie, as I do, I'm sure saw George Jackson as another wrongly imprisoned and oppressed and abused inmate who was simply trying to keep his own dignity and humanity during a time when prison guards had absolute authority to treat inmates any way they chose. I firmly believe that the governor never had any intent to grant Tookie clemency and this was the only reason he could give. California's governor is as much a murderer as any other convicted murderer in our prison system today.

I can understand how people could feel about the Death Penalty because I did most of my life in Prison. I come from Smithfield N.C. and was imprisoned at Central Prison in Raleigh, N.C. I was also, in there mental award for 30 days and think that I was misshandled by the guards. I was sent to the solitary because I had a pending deportation charge. I lived in The United States for 27 years of my life. 11 years of the 27 I did in jail or prison so if you speak of mental retardiness then that would be me. I have a brother that is on Death Row in N.C. before he came on death row he was at least 7 years of his 32 life years in prison. I think that the law sould maybe look more closer into people lives before you take a life. I had problems with drugs but I was never turned in any other direction. The goverment only care about how they can get there next vote. No one takes enough time to hear the people that cries for help in a time of need. I have been in Germany for 7 years now and you can believe that I have no thoughts to ever live in America ever again. I made mistakes and people make mistakes no one is perfect not even God himself. I think a person should always be given a chance to live because no one should be able to tell some one when they are going to die. Here in Germany we do not beleive in the Death Penalty. Tookie was a good person but, the ones with blind eyes looking at you - you will never have a chance. To my brother Mitchell D. Holmes (Chubb) I love you and keep your head up and remember that I love you.
Patrick!!!

I am so sick of all you bleeding hearts out there. What if someone killed your mother/father/brother/sister/wife/husband/child? Would you want him or her to pay for that? I think so. So, to all you bleeding hearts out there, you need to take a look at your own life and ask yourself, "What would you do?" If you still don't think that the death penalty is justifiable then what will it take for you to believe? A family member being murdered. I hope not...
Also, maybe all the non-supporters of the death penalty should pay the billions of dollars it takes each year to clothe/feed and EDUCATE (which is beyond me.. a degree with a life sentence??) those that should be killed. I like that idea. I am tired of paying for them. Eye for an eye!

Quote from Christian Maas (above) who says he spent most of his time in prison and his brother himself is on death row: "people make mistakes no one is perfect not even God himself. I think a person should always be given a chance to live because no one should be able to tell some one when they are going to die".
TELL THAT TO THE VICTIMS! TELL THAT TO THE PERSON BEING MURDERED! These inmates are not on Death Row for eating candy you know. They have taken life. How Anyone can believe they then have a right to live is beyond me.
I so agree with Kelly.
I totally support the Death Penalty. My only thing is that it shouldnt take years to happen. Better still, serve the same punishment that they gave the victims. Not an easy peasy kop out injection. See how they like being raped, mutilated and beaten.
