Truth in Documentaries
An interesting article in NY TIMES today reporting the href="http://www.nytimes.com/2005/03/29/movies/29docu.html?">heated debate surrounding the recent Academy Award winning film, Mighty Times: The Children's March. The film used undisclosed re-enactments that some consider a question of ethics.
Many documentary filmmakers have balked at strict definitions that might limit their creativity. "The difficulty in assigning a definition to documentaries is that everyone wants to maintain as much flexibility as possible while sticking to the core value of truth," said Mr. Else, the cinematographer, who is director of the documentary program at the graduate school of journalism at the University of California, Berkeley, and was the cinematographer of this year's Oscar-nominated feature "Tupac: Resurrection."
